The overreach of the cops isn't limited to poor and helpless fruit-sellers or vendors putting out saffron flags or writing "Hindu" on their shop banner.
Here is Sachin Sunil Savant, a CRPF Cobra Commando. He's chained and made to sit on the floor at Belgavi, Karnataka.
Sachin was washing his bike outside his home when a policeman accosted him for not wearing a mask. An argument ensued. Sachin reportedly said that he was within the limits of his own house and that is why he didn't wear a mask.
He was handcuffed and dragged to the police station.
Sachin Savant was treated in this despicable way despite declaring at the outset that he is a CRPF COBRA COMMANDO.
According to reports, not only was he beaten up, his clothes were torn and he was made to walk barefoot to the police station.
Then an FIR was registered against him
The incident happened in the afternoon of April 23 at Yaksamba village in Chikkodi Taluk of Belgavi district of Karnataka.
FIR mentions IPC 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), IPC 504, 505 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke)
The CRPF jawan then held the collar of our constable and started kicking him, the head constable then had to rescue his colleague, that's when you see him using the lathi, based on which the FIR was registered, said Belagavi SP Laxman Nimbargi.
There is NO version from Savant
It is obvious that there was an argument and then a fight ensued. The policeman shouldn't have taken on a commando.
But what happened next belies any civilised society.
The police usually chains dreaded criminals like this!
But is this how we treat our jawans?
Fellow Cobra Commandos say that he was paraded barefoot on the streets and not given water for several hours thereafter. The FIR was registered against him without informing his controlling authority.
If this is how police is going to treat respacted militry people, how would they treat civilians? Government must investigate the whole matter and take strong steps against police personals who did this.
